Why Powder Coat
What is Powder Coating?
Powder Coating is a process of electrostatically coating metal with a polyester powder. The Metal is then placed in an oven and baked at 400 degrees to melt and cure the polyester onto the metal substrate. This is a highly durable coating that is far superior to paint. It holds up better against rust and corrosion and retains color longer and resists chalking.
How Powder Coating Works
Powder Coating Powder is a mixture of polymer resins, curatives, pigments, leveling agents, flow modifiers and other additives that are melted together, cooled and ground down to a uniform powder similar to wheat flour. Each Powder mixture is inherently different because of what additives are used. Sheen, gloss, durability, color retention and texture are just a few of the characteristics that are decided upon before formulating the powder. For example if you want an 80% gloss instead of a 40% gloss there is no way to change the properties of the 40% gloss to achieve 80%. In order to get the 80% gloss a different mixture has to be formulated.
Durability of Powder Coating
Powder Coating provides a more durable finish than any liquid paints can offer. That is why heavy machinery, weight equipment, refrigerators, ovens, household appliances and many other industries choose powder coating over painting.
Benefits of Powder Coating
Powder Coating is a clean process, its environmentally friendly and the curing process emits no harmful VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). There is no better alternative than Powder Coating if you are looking for a long lasting durable finish.
Not All Powder Coaters are Created Equal
When choosing a Powder Coating Company keep in mind that not all powder coaters are created equal. The Powder Coating Process is an art in and of itself. Powder Coated Parts will fail if the substrate is not properly prepared. Proper preparation includes Sandblasting to a “White Finish” that cleanse the metal surface of all impurities, grease, oxide, rust, paint etc… Followed by epoxy priming and completed with a Super Durable TGIC Polyester top coat. Don’t be fooled by price, there are many ways to cut corners in Powder Coating and we pride ourselves on our quality and exceptional durability of our coating.
